he Spotted Whistling Duck, owes its name to the medal pattern that appear on its feathers as an adult.
They measure 43 to 50 cm in length and have a brown chest and flank, with the aforementioned medals. The neck has blackened sides, the beak and feet are dark gray. They do not have sexual dimorphism, the male being slightly larger and presenting a more erect posture. The young have identical coloring, though the medal pattern appears later.
They feed on grasses that they harvest on the lakeside or even under water when they are submerged. This species also eats aquatic plants, aquatic insects, small fish, tadpoles and crustaceans. Dives very easily and stays underwater for a long time.
They can build nests on both hollow tree trunks and on the ground. The female lays 8 to 12 eggs which are hatched by the couple for approximately one month. The ducklings begin to fly after 60 days.
