he Black Swan is a bird native from Australia, where it exists in large quantities. The plumage is black with white tips, although the latter are hardly visible. The beak is red with a white tip. The adult animal can weigh up to 9 kg. Unlike many other waterfowls, black swans have no migratory habits and spend their lives where they are born.
This bird shows preference for lakes. When swimming, it uses the neck to search for aquatic vegetation up to a meter deep. It nestles in colonies during the rainy season, building nests on small islands, near the lakes. Once mated, swans remain together for life. Usually the nest is an accumulation of aquatic plants that can reach up to two meters in diameter. The nests are used every year, being repaired and reconstructed if necessary. Nests are provided by both members of the couple.
The laying is done at the rate of one egg a day, for a total of 4-7 pale green eggs. The incubation of the eggs starts after laying the last egg. Both the male and the female perform the incubation and the male has the duty to protect the nest. Hatching takes place between 35 to 40 days.
The cygnets are born white and, like other swans, stroll on their parents' backs when they are small. They start flying after six months of age and become adults from the age of two years old. Both genders have the same appearance with the male being slightly larger.
