he Mandarin Duck, is small to medium sized and is a close relative of the Wood Duck. It measures between 41-49 cm in length, with a wing span of 65 to 75 cm.
The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red beak, growing white bands above the eyes, a reddish face and "whiskers". The chest is purple with two vertical bands and the flanks are pink with two orange bands that slide down the back. The female is similar to the female Wood Duck, with a white ring around the eye, whitish on the bottom, with a small white band on the side and a whitish beak tip.
Mandarin Ducks are often highlighted in Oriental art and considered as symbols of affection and fidelity. After mating, they stay together for the rest of their lives.
They nest between April and August in tree cavities and they lay 8-12 eggs that are brooded for 28 days. The ducklings are fed by the mother solely during the first days. They reach sexual maturity at the year of age.
