Its head is lighter and has brownish-yellow tones that may appear almost white. The tail, legs and beak are dark. The male has a thin black collar, more visible at the time of reproduction, which is absent in the female. In flight, white feathers cover both the top and bottom of its wings.
The laying, of about 8 eggs, takes place from late April to June. The incubation, done exclusively by the female, lasts approximately 28 days. Young ducklings are raised by both parents and fly after 8 weeks.
