he Cape Barren Goose, commonly called Cereopsis, is a large goose originally from southern Australia. The species is named after Cape Barren Island, where specimens were first spotted by European explorers.
Its dimensions vary between 75 and 100 cm and its weight between 3.2 and 6.8 kg. The female is smaller than the male and easily identifiable. Young geese are lighter, with spots on their wings.
They inhabit low pastures and frequent beaches, lakes and lagoons. When adults they avoid entering the water, but the goslings swim. They are essentially vegetarian, feeding almost exclusively on land, grass leaves and seeds, needing a good space to graze.
They are monogamous and live in small families, building shallow nests on the soil, which are covered with vegetation. They lay an average of 5 eggs, varying from 3 to 6. The brooding varies between 34 to 37 days, with 89% of the eggs hatching at 54% survival rate. The chicks are gray mottled in black. Goslings become independent after 70 and 76 days.
During the mating season the female emits a strong piglike sound and the male has a weaker intonation. The mating ceremony is beautiful because the birds are constantly moving. It is a strong bird, resistant to illnesses.
