SF has always been involved with the preservation of this breed. The owner of QSF was one of the ten founding members of ACRA (Association of Rafeiro do Alentejo breeders).
This is an animal of noble character, calm, confident and extremely loyal. This breed is particularly patient with children. The rafeiros like the attention, but refuse to learn useful tricks.
They are molosous, originated from the crossing of asian molosus with amastinated dogs.
This is the largest Portuguese dog breed and one of the most beautiful. The Rafeiros do Alentejo are very large dogs, strong and of rustic appearance. They are extremely territorial guard dogs and may be aggressive to strangers, attacking before a perceived threat. They are especially attentive at night.
The body of the Rafeiro do Alentejo is long and medium sized, with thick and smooth fur. Its color may be black, dirty beige, grey, brown or yellow with white spots.
Splashed, striped and tigrated patterns are also accepted.
These dogs are very effective with their energy expenses and tends to save it for the guarding activity. Due to their agility, weight and strength they are also used in big game hunting. The breed matures at the age of four. They live with other animals, as long as they have been introduced to them from an early age.
